This baby santa hat pattern and baby cocoon / baby bunting is just too cute! This makes a wonderful baby's first Christmas gift - plus the outfit looks wonderful in photos. Be sure to make one for the special little one in your life today. Be sure to check out my YouTube Tutorial Video on how to make this in the next section!

Materials:
About 300 yards of worsted weight yarn in a red color. The sample used was Red Heart Love. About 50 yards of fuzzy or texture white yarn. The sample used was Bernat Pipsqueak. Less than 20 yards of a black worsted weight yarn. The sample used was Red Heart Super Saver. H (5 mm) crochet hook. Scissors, Yarn needle, 1 sheet of yellow felt, Fabric glue (optional).

Santa Hat:
Preferable size: Newborn to 6 months old. See under "ADJUSTMENTS" for other sizes. Finished measurements: 17" circumference; 15-17" height.
With red yarn, make a magic ring. Chain 2. Note: Chain 2 will never count as a stitch throughout this pattern. Instead, it is just a filler of gaps and spaces you oftentimes see with double crochet stitches.
Rnd 1: 6 DC in ring. SLST to first DC (do not slst to the ch 2). Total = 6 DC.
Rnd 2: 1 DC around. Total = 6 DC.
Rnd 3: 2 DC in each stitch. Total = 12 DC.
Rnd 4: 1 DC around. Total = 12 DC.
Rnd 5: 2 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 18 DC.
Rnd 6: 1 DC around. Total = 18 DC.
Rnd 7: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 24 DC.
Rnd 8: 1 DC around. Total = 24 DC.
Rnd 9: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 30 DC.
Rnd 10: 1 DC around. Total = 30 DC
Rnd 11: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 36 DC
Rnd 12: 1 DC around. Total = 36 DC
Rnd 13: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 42 DC.
Rnds 14: 1 DC around.
Measure. Hat should have about a 13"-16" circumference at this point for a newborn to 6 month old. If it is not, see below under "ADJUSTMENTS."
Rnds 15 to 21+:1 DC around.
Rnds 22-25:Switch to white fuzzy yarn and make 1 DC around.
Add pom pom or see video for crocheting a pom pom into the hat. Cut and weave in all ends.

Adjustments:
If your hat is too large, remove rounds in groups of two or start over and use a smaller crochet hook or use a thinner yarn. If your hat is too small, increase rounds in groups of two using the below formula or start over and use a larger crochet hook or use a thicker yarn.
How to Increase in Pattern after Rnd 14:
Next Rnd: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, around
Next Rnd: 1 DC (stop and measure)
Next Rnd: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, around
Next Rnd: 1 DC (stop and measure)
Next Rnd: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, around
Next Rnd: 1 DC (stop and measure)
To fit the following sizes, use the Increase in Pattern method above until you acheive the following sizes: (Newborn/6 months = 13-15"); Baby/Toddler = 16-18"; Child = 19-20"; Woman = 21-22"; Man = 23-25". Then continue on with the pattern: Next several rounds (make as many as you wish to achieve a comfortable height size): 1 DC around. Last 3 Rnds: Switch to white fuzzy yarn and make 1 DC around.

Baby Cocoon:
Size: Newborn to 6 months old. Finished measurements: 20-25" circumference; 20-22" height.

Instructions:
With red yarn, make a magic ring. Chain 2. Note: Chain 2 will never count as a stitch throughout this pattern. Instead, it is just a filler of gaps and spaces you oftentimes see with double crochet stitches.
Rnd 1: 12 DC in ring. SLST to first DC (do not slst to the ch 2). Total = 12 DC.
Rnd 2: 2 DC in each stitch. Total = 24 DC.
Rnd 3: 2 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 36 DC.
Rnd 4: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 48 DC.
Rnd 5: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 60 DC.
Rnd 6: 2 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC, 1 DC around. Total = 72 DC.
Measure your work as per the video. The circumference should be no less than 18-20" to comfortably fit a newborn-6 month old. If your work is too small, continue increasing in rounds (e.g. next rnd: 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 and then 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, etc.). If your work is too large, rip out a round or two.
Rnd 7: 1 DC around
Continue on with 1 DC around until the height measures 10 inches. Switch to black yarn for 2-3 rows for Santa's belt using 1 DC around. Switch back to red yarn until height of cocoon is 18-20 inches. Switch to white fuzzy yarn for 2-3 rows using 1 DC around. Cut and weave in all ends.
Cut out a small rectangular piece of yellow felt and sew on or use fabric hot glue to secure the belt onto the cocoon.
