Easy Crocheted Granny Square (and Triangle or Half Granny Square) Tote

This is a fun crochet project to make - a granny square purse or hand bag tote. It is comprised of several granny squares and half granny squares (triangles) that are then sewn together. It's much easier than it looks. Check out the written pattern below and most especially, check out my YouTube video tutorial for how to crochet this tote!
 
Materials:
600 yards of worsted weight yarn. Sample purse used 5 balls of Sugar n' Cream worsted weight cotton yarn. 1 in green, 1 in coral, 1 in yellow and 2 in blue. H (5 mm) crochet hook. Scissors. Yarn needle. Paperclips (4). Button or other closure (optional). Fabric glue (optional). Felt & plastic canvas for an easy-to-make purse lining (optional).
 
Instructions:
Square - Make 9. With color A, Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (counts as 1 DC). 2 DC in ring. *Ch 2. 3 DC in ring.* Rpt between * and * 2 more times. End with 1 HDC to starting CH. Pull beginning strand tightly to close ring. Cut yarn.
Rnd 2: SLST with color B, ch 1. SLST into sp. (this keeps color changes neat). Ch 3. 1 DC in space. *1 DC in next 3 stitches. In corner space, 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC.* Rpt between * and * two more times. 1 DC in next 3 stitches. In corner space, 2 DC, 1 HDC to top of starting ch 3. Cut yarn
Rnd 3: SLST with color C, ch 1. SLST into sp. Ch 3. 1 DC in sp. *1 DC in next 7 stitches. In corner sp, 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC.* Rpt bet * and * two more times. 1 DC in next 3 stitches. In corner space, 2 DC, 1 HDC to top of starting ch 3. Cut yarn.
Rnd 4: SLST with color D, ch 1. SLST into sp. Ch 3. 1 DC in sp. *1 DC in next 11 stitches. In corner space, 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC.* Rpt bet * and * two more times. 1 DC in next 3 stitches. In corner sp, 2 DC, 1 HDC to top of starting ch 3. Cut yarn. Knot all strands. Secure with fabric glue if desired. Weave in all ends.
 
Half Granny Square - Triangle - Make 4. With color A, Magic Ring.
Rnd 1: CH 4 (counts as 1 DC + 1 ch). 3 DC in ring. CH 2. 3 DC in ring. CH 1, DC in ring. Pull beginning strand tightly to close ring. Cut yarn.
Rnd 2: With color B, make slipknot on hook. Insert hook into top of CH 3 and make a SLST. CH 4. 2 DC in space. 1 DC in each of the next 3 stitches. In top sp, 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. 1 DC in next 3 stitches. In next sp, 2 DC. CH 1. 1 DC in last stitch. Cut yarn.
Rnd 3: With color C, make slipknot. Insert hook into top of CH 3 and SLST. CH 4. 2 DC in space. 1 DC in each of the next 7 stitches. In top sp, 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. 1 DC in next 7 stitches. In next sp, 2 DC. CH 1. 1 DC in last stitch. Cut yarn.
Rnd 4: With color D, make slipknot. Insert hook into top of CH 3 and SLST. CH 4. 2 DC in sp. 1 DC in each of the next 11 stitches. In top sp, 2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC. 1 DC in next 11 stitches. In next sp, 2 DC. Ch 1. 1 DC in last stitch. Cut yarn. Knot all strands. Secure with fabric glue and weave in all ends.
Arrange and sew motifs according to video. Once completed, do 3-4 rounds of SC along the top edge. Line purse and sew on button if desired. Add purchased straps.
Built-in Straps:
Lay purse flat. Use 4 paperclips to mark center of 4 triangles. Connect yarn at stitch marker on front, left side of purse. Make SC until next stitch marker.
*CH 1 and turn. Skip first SC and SC across row, skipping last SC.* Rpt bet * and * until 6 or 7 SC remain. CH 1, turn and SC in every stitch. Continue on until desired length.
Repeat for right strap. SC around strap edgings if desired to finish.
