How to Crochet a Tree Ornament Decoration
This crochet tree ornament decoration is a cute and quick project. They are fun to make, use small amounts of yarn, and also make great gits!
Crochet Ornament Overview
This tree ornament is made in two halves that are then joined together around a plastic ornament. I like to use old or scratched ornaments as it makes for a great upcycling project. You can also use a Styrofoam ball or even fiberfill stuffing.
The stitches are mainly double crochet and front post double crochet. The sides are just single crochet stitches. If you need help with the basics of crochet, please see my beginner videos.
Once the two halves are made, you can just fit the crochet pieces around the ornament and sew the seam. I like to glue on a gem to the front, but that’s optional. And that’s it!
Color Changes
There are a good amount of color changes in this ornament. And if you have scrap pieces of yarn around, you can definitely use them in this project.
Because this is an ornament and not an item that will be washed and worn heavily, I do my color changes a bit differently. Since no one will see the back or inside of the crochet work, I just cut and knot my ends in the back. Then trim them. This way you don’t have to weave in all of those ends. Plus you can finish them as you go.
For this project I’m using 100% worsted weight yarn and a size G 4 or 4.25 mm crochet hook. I happen to like the Walmart brand Mainstays yarn these days for Christmas items. Their red, white, and green are nice as traditional colors for the tree. They also have some other wonderful colors that would look great in these ornaments!
