How to make a Reversible Crochet Stitch
Reversible Crochet Stitch is a neat textured pattern created by crocheting two pieces separately for two rows, then joining them together.
How It’s Made
At first, reversible crochet looks complicated. But when you break down what’s really happening, you see it’s pretty simple. Basically there is a shell stitch type of pattern on one side in one color. Then on the other side there is the same type of shell stitch pattern but in a different color. The two sides are joined together while making the stitches.
Also, the pattern consists of two types of rows. First, there is a shell or v-stitch type of row. This consists of 2 double crochet, 1 chain, and 2 double crochet (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc). Then there is a chain loop row. This consists of alternating single crochet (sc) and chain 5 (ch 5) stitches.
You’ll alternate these two types of rows, while simultaneously joining the two colors together. Sometimes this is called a double sided stitch or reverse shell stitch. As long as you can keep track of what row goes next, the pattern is a snap to make.

Materials for this Pattern
You can use any yarn you want to for this project. For the sample I used worsted weight 100% acrylic yarn, specifically Red Heart Super Saver. You can definitely use a DK weight yarn or a bulky/chunky weight yarn as well.
For the video, I wanted to be able to clearly demonstrate the stitches. I used a crochet hook that was much larger than needed. I used an 8 mm size L crochet hook. Normally I would use an H 5 mm crochet hook with worsted weight. Feel free to experiment with hook sizes to get a different look in your work.
Color possibilities are endless in this reversible crochet stitch pattern. You can keep one side a light color and the other side a dark color. Or you can make one side a neutral color (white, gray, black) and use a multi-colored yarn on the other side. I chose to make one side an off-white color, and the other side I changed colors every 6 rows (3 shell rows + 3 chain rows). It’s always fun to experiment with this pattern!
