How to Crochet a Large Fan Stitch or Big Shell Stitch
The crochet large fan stitch is a unique take on the traditional crochet shell stitch. The larger fans and big shells produce a nice look. You can use this crochet stitch in a shawl, afghan, baby blanket, scarf, tunic, sweater, and more.
This is a fun pattern that uses mainly single crochet stitches along with treble crochet stitches. Plus you’ll use a treble crochet cluster stitch. That’s pretty much a 2 stitch set. You will first start the treble crochet, but don’t finish it. Then you’ll start the second treble crochet, and finish it along with the first one.

Color Changes and Yarn
With this pattern, I do the chain and Row 1 with the same color yarn. After that, I change colors every 2 rows. You certainly can do this pattern all in one solid color. Or you can alternate between two colors or three, or four, or more.
As with any stitch pattern, you can use any type of yarn along with its corresponding crochet hook. You can use a DK weight yarn if you want to make a lightweight shawl with this pattern. Or if you want a really chunky scarf, consider using a bulky weight yarn. And if you can’t decide, go with the traditional medium weight or worsted weight yarn and a size H 5 mm crochet hook.
How Do I Make Something
One of the questions I get often is, “How do I make a blanket from this stitch?” Luckily I already made a video to help you with that!
Oftentimes crocheters will ask “How many chains do I need” for a queen-sized bed, or a king-sided bed, or a full bed or a twin bed. You’ll discover the answers to those questions in my written information and tutorial video found HERE. While this sample focuses mostly on blankets, you can use this same information for making a pillow, or a scarf, etc.
