How to Crochet Lace Sleeves on a Tank Top or Sleeveless dress

These Crochet Lace Sleeves work great for a tank top or sleeveless dress. They are easy to make with a lighter weight yarn or crochet thread.

About This Pattern

It can get quite hot even here in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Tank tops and sleeveless dresses are great for the warmer weather. But, sometimes you feel a bit uncomfortable wearing sleeveless tops to some events. Crochet lace sleeves are one way to dress for the weather yet still look professional.

I like simple, easy-to-remember crochet patterns. Luckily, the stitches flare out nicely by themselves in this pattern, creating the correct shape for the sleeves. I’ve used this stitch pattern several times before, including in my Mermaid Tail Scarf. The stitch pattern consists mainly of “V stitches.” They start with one double crochet, followed by a chain one, and another double crochet. Then the V stitch increases every other row. Eventually, you’ll have five double crochet stitches, followed by a chain one and another five double crochet stitches.

What Yarn or Thread to Use

With clothing, the yarn or thread truly makes or breaks the item. You can make a seemingly beginner single crochet stitch clothing item look super professional with the “correct” fiber. Or the most intricate crochet lace pattern can look unprofessional with certain yarn types. In my sample sleeve, I used a 100% cotton crochet thread in size 3. This size thread is about the equivalent of sport-weight yarn, sometimes listed as [2] on the yarn label. It’s not that ultra-thin thread that people use to make doilies. But it’s not regular worsted weight dishcloth cotton either. I am using a size G 4 mm crochet hook with it if that helps clarify the thickness of the fiber. I think the crochet thread gives it a nice look.

Plus, the tank is very easy to wash. I’m going to suggest that you always hand-wash your items that have crochet on them. However, realistically we’re all swamped and don’t have much time to hand-wash items. So you can put the tank top with the attached crochet sleeves in a zippered washing bag and put them in the washing machine on a delicate cycle. If you don’t have a zippered washing bag, feel free to use a pillowcase instead and tie a knot on the opened end. I’ve done this many times, and the tops still look good.
