Crochet the Arcade Stitch, also called the Arch Stitch
The crochet arcade stitch, sometimes called the arch stitch, is a lovely vintage stitch. It has been around longer than most of us! It works great for blankets, scarves, shawls, bags, tunics, skirts, and more.
Offset Arcade Stitch
The crochet arcade stitch can be classified as an offset stitch pattern. What that means the stitch pattern generally repeats on subsequent rows. However, the stitches are moved over a bit on each row (or round). This creates a nice visual variation of the arch.
If you wonder where the name “arcade” comes from then? It’s pretty clear the pattern looks like a series of arches. When you put multiple arches side by side, the architectural term is called an arcade.
Patterns that are not offset stitch patterns are generally referred to as symmetrical stitch patterns. This means the shell or design repeats directly on top of each other for subsequent rows or rounds.
I’ve also seen the arcade stitch done as a symmetrical stitch, so there’s an idea for a future idea, right?
Arch Crochet Stitches
Several basic crochet stitches are used to create the arch in the arcade stitch. You will need to know how to crochet a chain, abbreviated as CH. Other stitches include single crochet, SC, and half double, HDC. The double crochet, DC, is the primary stitch.

About the Yarn and Hook
I have seen this stitch pattern done in just about every thickness (or thinness) of yarn and thread. I’ve seen it done in size 20 crochet thread. And I’ve seen it made in super bulky weight yarn.
For this arcade stitch sample I’m using Red Heart Super Saver yarn, which is a worsted weight. And I’m using a size H 5 mm crochet hook. Feel free to go up or down one size, depending upon how loosely or tightly you crochet your stitches.
As always whatever yarn you choose, just use the recommended hook size the manufacturer recommends on the label. Enjoy this arcade stitch and its lovely arch design!
