How to Crochet a Basket for your Home Decor

A crochet basket makes a lovely home décor item. And these three nesting baskets work great for storing items, especially yarn!

I can’t say that I’m the most organized person in the universe. As a matter of fact, I’m probably somewhere near the bottom of the list. However, I do know how to make cute items to hold my yarn and other items!

About these Crochet Baskets

These crochet baskets or crochet bowls are pretty cute. There’s no question about that. They come in 3 sizes – small, medium, and large. The small basket is 5” in diameter, 2 ¼” in height. Medium is 7” x 3”. And the large is 11” x 5.5”.

But how sturdy are they? As with anything knitted or crocheted, there is always a bit of drape to the item. Drape is good when you want a nice flowy scarf. However, drape (or give) is not good for certain things like a container to hold items.

I’ve eliminated some issues that traditional crochet baskets oftentimes have. First, I suggest using 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together. Specifically, I like Red Heart Super Saver for this project. Regular Super Saver isn’t exactly the softest yarn on the market, and that’s a good thing in this case. This 100% worsted weight yarn, doubled, helps us create a nice strong item.

Plus, I use a size H hook. Normally, I suggest a size H hook just for one strand of yarn. So using this size of hook with 2 strands of yarn helps produce a stronger stitch that stands up more often than it flops down.

Make them Sturdy (Sturdier)

Yarn behaves so much like hair to me. If I plaster my hair with super hold hair spray, it becomes super stiff and doesn’t budge. If I don’t, it flops all over the place. The same could be said for yarn, although I generally do not use hair spray on yarn products, except, sometimes for yarn pom-poms.

But what I do use consists of either a purchased stiffening product, or a white glue and water mixture. Aleene’s has a nice stiffening product. Spray starch also works nice. Or you can create a mixture of 1 part water and 1 part glue and paint it onto the item. There’s always a debate online as to whether you should use Elmer’s School Glue or Elmer’s Glue All. Personally, I have had good luck with both, but tend to favor the Glue All one since supposedly it’s a little more permanent once dried. In other words, it’s less likely to wash out when exposed to water. It’s not like you will be washing these crochet baskets much, if at all… but, it’s nice to know they will keep their shape even if you do.
