How to Crochet a Button Flower
This crochet button flower is quick, simple, and easy to make for a hat, scarf, shawl, bag, and more. These flower are a cute embellishment.
Before you Begin
These button flowers are pretty simple to make as long as you know your basic crochet stitches. And if you need a refresher on crochet stitches, feel free to check out my beginner videos for the right hand as well as the left hand.
How to Make
These flowers can be used with any size button with very small adjustments to the hook and fiber. For the 1.25″ sample shown in the video, I’m using a DK weight yarn, which oftentimes shows as a [3] on the label. The 2″ button also works nicely with DK weight yarn and a C 2.75 mm crochet hook.
The crochet hook might vary, however, based upon the size of the buttonholes. You might have to go down in size a bit if the hook can’t fit in them. Or, you can use a tiny hook just to draw up the loops from the buttonholes, then use another regular-sized hook to do the chains and stitches part.
With the smaller buttons like the .75″ wide ones, I like to use embroidery floss or thinner crochet thread. You can use a fingering weight, shown as a [2] on the label. Or feel free to use a sock yarn, which is a [1] on the label. You can also use a crochet thread in size #3, #9, or #10. Perle cotton in size #8 is pretty thin and will work for the really small buttons.
