How to Crochet the Cabbage Patch Stitch Pattern

The crochet cabbage patch stitch pattern is a lovely vintage stitch that works nicely for a blanket, scarf, shawl, and more. We’ll first create double crochet stitches on one row. Then we’ll follow the next row with crossed double crochet stitches. This creates the look of the cabbage stitch.

Cabbage Patch Stitches

The neat thing about this pattern is it really only uses chains and double crochet stitches. Technically it’s very easy for a beginner who knows these two basic crochet stitches.

The first row is formed with double crochet stitches in groups of 4. The second row is made with crossed double crochet stitches. Here’s where it gets interesting.

If you make your second row’s first double crochet tighter than normal, something interesting happens. It will really bunch up the first row’s stitches into a little bobble, or essentially a head of cabbage. Or you can make your second row’s stitches a bit loosely. This will make the cabbage stitch less round and 3D.

As you can see, you can definitely regulate the look of this stitch pattern more than almost any other stitch out there!

Yarn and Hooks

For those that know me, I almost always use my trusty H 5 mm crochet hook. And I like scrap yarn in 100% acrylic. It’s usually Red Heart Super Saver, but I’m never completely sure. I keep ends from larger projects and use them for these stitch videos.

As with most stitch pattern, this cabbage patch stitch can be made with almost any weight or yarn. Check the yarn’s label for the suggested crochet hook size for the best results.
