How to Crochet the Crocodile Stitch

The crochet crocodile stitch, also known as dragon scales, is used in designs like a mermaid blanket, clothing, edgings, and handbags.

About This Pattern

The crochet crocodile stitch has been around for a long time. This stitch pattern has sometimes been called dragon scales as well. It’s a lovely textured shell stitch that has interesting layers that resemble scales.

This can be used for a mermaid blanket, various clothing items, edgings, as well as a handbag. A pearl can be added at the bottom of each scale for an interesting look.

The primary stitch in this pattern is the double crochet. The scales are made with double crochet stitch, plus the foundation itself is made with double crochet. The key to making this look interesting is by working around the double crochet post stitches from the previous row.

For this sample I’m using 100% acrylic yarn in DK weight with a crochet hook size of 4.5 mm. As always any size hook and yarn can be used. The yarn label usually suggests a crochet hook size.

As always I have a step-by-step tutorial video showing how to make this pattern. I hope you enjoy! Donna Wolfe from Naztazia.
