Inspired by Taylor Swift wearing VRG GRL crochet dress
The crochet granny stripes is a vintage stitch pattern revived by Taylor Swift wearing the latest fashion crochet dress by VRG GRL.
About Granny Stripes
The crochet granny stripes stitch pattern is a vintage design that has appeared countless times in crochet books dating back to the late 1800s. The stitch pattern is very similar to a traditional granny square, except granny squares are made in the round. This one is made in back and forth rows.
We crocheters love when celebrities wear crochet fashion, especially ones with familiar stitch patterns like this. As soon as I saw the dress, I went into my yarn stash and pulled out colors that just about matched perfectly to the outfit.

About the Taylor Swift Inspired Dress
It’s important to note that my step-by-step video shows two concepts. First, I show how to make the actual stitch pattern known as the granny stripes stitch. Second, I cover briefly how to make the dress itself. I respect the original designer of the dress, so I’m not comfortable going into absolute detail on how to create it. However, it’s a pretty standard design, with minimal shaping involved.
The dress is comprised of essentially 4 rectangles. One for the front, one for the back (granted both have nice tapered necklines, which are optional), one for the left sleeve, and one for the right sleeve.
The stitch pattern itself is worked in vertical rows for the dress. That means the initial chain length determines the height of the dress from the neckline towards the legs. The width of the dress is determined by the number of rows made. It’s pretty easy to customize this dress for anyone’s size.
Sew the two rectangles together along the side, leaving the armholes open. Sew the two sleeves to the body. Make a single crochet border along all edges.
I would highly recommend using a thinner yarn or crochet thread. The worsted weight yarn I used in the video is really for blankets or a very heavy dress. Sport weight yarn is probably the best. If that’s not readily available, DK weight yarn will do. The original dress is made with 100% acrylic, so that might be a good choice, as 100% cotton might end up too heavy. A blend of acrylic and cotton is always my favorite.
The yarn I used includes:
- The peach yarn is Michael’s Loops & Threads Soft Classic in Light Coral.
- The brown yarn is Red Heart Super Saver in Cafe Latte.
- The purple yarn is Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn in 292 Amethyst.
- The ivory yarn is Hobby Lobby’s Crafter’s Secret Big Idea in 5 Magnolia Way.
