How to Crochet a Rose Flower with Leaf Tutorial and Pattern
This crochet rose flower with leaf tutorial is easy to make. Use the flower in a corsage or with a stem in a bouquet or vase.
About This Flower
This flower consists of only three rows. It’s a simple pattern composed of single crochet stitches, chains, and double crochet. First, you’ll set up the foundation for the subsequent rows. The next row is a slight variation on row one. Finally, the third row produces the actual petals. Each petal consists of four double crochet stitches (twice) separated by a picot stitch. A picot is made by chaining three and slip stitching into the first chain.
The leaf is pretty simple too. It consists of a starting chain that will be worked on both sides. You’ll then use a series of single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet stitches to create the leaf. A slip stitch to the first stitch finishes the look. Materials Used
Feel free to use any yarn weight or fiber content with this crochet rose flower. My sample uses a 100% cotton yarn in worsted weight. I use scrap yarn, specifically “mill ends” for small projects like this. Since you only need about 30 yards per flower, it’s a great way to use up all those odds and ends in your stash.
If you want the flower smaller, use a thinner crochet thread or embroidery floss. Looking for a giant flower? Use a thicker yarn. You can find the suggested crochet hook size usually on the yarn or crochet thread label.
How to Use the Flower and Leaf
There are several ways I’ve used crochet flowers and leaves in projects. The first is in wreaths and other home decor. You can place the crochet rose around a wreath just as you would a silk flower. With this you need primarily the flower and the leaves are optional. I’ve also purchased flower stems from the dollar stores. The flower part aren’t always so lovely, but the stem part is usually really nice. Hot glue your rose flower onto the stem and use it in a bouquet or in a vase.
I’ve also used thin crochet thread with this flower pattern. You can then hot glue the flower (and leaves) to a hair barrette for a pretty summer look. I’ve also used DK weight yarn with this flower and used it on hats, shawls, scarves, etc. So many different ways to use a crochet rose flower and leaf!
