About the Shell Scales Pattern

I love shell stitch patterns. And if you haven’t already notice, I love bright, colorful things. Ironically, if you ever see me out in person, I’m dressed head to toe in either solid black or navy blue. But everything else in my life, I love vivid colors with lots of designs.

This is a neat stitch pattern that uses mostly chains, single crochet, and treble crochet stitches. The shell row contains primarily treble crochet stitches with a single crochet in between. The bright pink row in the sample stitch pattern contains primarily single crochet stitches.

What’s probably unique about the pattern is how color changes are handled. I do something different in the video (and in the written pattern), which I’m not sure I’ve ever done in any other video. In this particular pattern, I drop the shell yarn, and pick up the outline yarn from the other side. Then I continue with the outline yarn going in the same direction as the previous shell pattern. It keeps you from having to fasten off the yarn after every row.

Yarn and Hook

As with any stitch pattern, you can use any type of yarn. You can use acrylic or cotton, or wool, or even jute. I generally suggest looking on the yarn’s label to see what hook size they recommend. That’s the hook to start with first. And as always feel free to go up or down with the hook size to your liking.

My sample uses worsted weight yarn and a size H 5 mm crochet hook.

Now my local AC Moore went out of business in the beginning of 2020. Before they did, I grabbed an enormous amount of their “mill ends.” These are odds and ends type of yarn, with little to no labels on them. I get a kick out of the writing on the bag because it says, “Mixed fibers of unknown origin.” That’s rather ominous!

There are several yarn types which look nice in stitch videos – and this is one of them. It feels like a 100% acrylic yarn, worsted weight. It’s a little “splitty,” but I can deal with that, especially since it’s nice and soft.
