How to Crochet the Star Stitch Hat

Here’s a lovely textured crochet star stitch hat. The entire work is constructed using the side-to-side method. Both the folded-over ribbing and the top section crown are made at the same time. One end of the work contains the half double crochet ribbing while the other end contains the star stitch. The ribbing looks like a knitted ribbing due to alternating the front and back loops of the HDCs. Sew a faux fur pompom on top for decoration.

Stitches Used

And now, the stitches. You will find it’s a relatively simple pattern once you see how the star stitch hat is made . For this hat, other basic crochet terms you will need to know are the chain (CH) and half double crochet (HDC). It is also helpful to know that the anatomy of the half double crochet stitch contains 3 loops. Here they are: there is a back loop, a front loop, and a front-front loop, also known as the third loop. If this loop appears in the back some people call it a back bump. Additionally, the stitch itself has 3 vertical loops. There’s a longer one on one side, and two shorter ones on the other side. We’ll be using almost all of these different loops in this head warmer!

Supplies

I’m also using a size H 5 mm crochet hook. Plus I really love the Red Heart Heat Wave yarn. I chose the gray color called Passport for this design. The heat wave yarn, when exposed to ultraviolet sunlight, keeps you 12 degrees warmer. I’m not sure exactly how it works. But I do know the photo was taken in 28 degrees F weather here in freezing cold Pennsylvania, and I was nice and toasty warm!
