How to Crochet Straight Edges
Learn how to crochet straight edges with the most popular crochet stitches in this written pattern and tutorial video.
About Crochet Straight Edges
With crochet, the top and bottom edges are usually relatively straight, unless there’s a shell stitch pattern that doesn’t square off by itself. The right and left edges are sometimes challenging to keep straight. Sometimes the project looks good with the wavy scalloped edging that naturally occurs with crochet stitches. However, sometimes we might prefer to have a straight edge on a scarf or with pieces that will be joined together.
There are a few quick and easy ways to keep your edges straight depending upon the stitch you are using. Below is a breakdown of those stitches.
Crochet Stitches
- Single Crochet. With single crochet (SC), the easiest way to keep the edges straight is to turn the work, omit the chain 1, stretch the loop a bit more, then make a single crochet into the very first stitch.
- Half Double Crochet. With half double crochet (HDC), keep the edges straight by turning the work, making a chain 1, stretch the loop a bit more, then proceed with making a half double crochet in the very first stitch.
- Double Crochet. There are two methods with double crochet (DC). The first method stretches the loop a bit more than the height of the double crochet stitch. Proceed with making a yarn under (YU) using the loop, and then finish by using the regular double crochet method. The second method skips the first chain and makes a single crochet (SC) in the second chain from the hook. Then another single crochet is made on top by using the side loop of the first single crochet.
- Treble Crochet. Modifying the double crochet (DC) method, make 3 single crochet stitches stacked on top of each other to create the first stitch of a treble crochet (TR) row.
