How to Crochet a Warm Winter Hat Tutorial
Here’s how to crochet a warm winter hat with extended and cross-over stitches for both texture and added warmth.
About this Pattern
This crochet warm winter hat pattern is a fun hat to make. It is started at the brim area, then worked upwards along the sides and towards the crown. The stitch is a connected cross-over stitch variation, which you can find more information on here.
The video shows how to make a woman’s sized hat. However, the written pattern explains the changes for a child and a man’s sized hat. From a standards perspective, an average “child” sized hat fits a 20 inch head. An average “women” sized hat fits a 22 inch head. And an average “man” sized hat fits a 24″ inch head. However, some of us women with larger heads and bigger hairdos might find the “man’s sized” hat more suitable.
And if none of these standard sizes suit you, the pattern is easy to customize to your own needs.
The brim is made of single crochet stitches, made in the back loops only to created a ribbed effect. After the brim is made, the sides are made using the connected crossover stitch pattern. Then the crown part of the hat uses the same pattern but has a slight decrease in the stitches to help taper the top section.
Materials Use
For this pattern I opted for a very basic worsted weight yarn that you can find at Michaels craft store known as “Craftsmart Value” yarn. I know it’s not easy to find yarn these days, so feel free to substitute with the many other worsted weight yarns like Red Heart Super Saver or the other Yarnspirations standard worsted weight yarn.
For what it’s worth I’m using the color “Ice Blue” for my sample. I’m also using a size H 5 mm crochet hook along with a yarn needle, scissors, and a soft measuring tape.
I chose a pompom for the top of the hat, but feel free to omit it if you aren’t really into pompoms. This one is a smaller one and seems to add a cute little touch to the top of the hat.
