How to Crochet with Wire and Beads

This tutorial will show how to crochet with wire and beads. You can make nice jewelry components with beads, wire, and a crochet hook.

For this tutorial it helps if you already know how to make some basic stitches in crochet. You will need to know how to make a slip knot and crochet a chain.

If you need help with these topics, please see my beginner crochet video for both the right and left hands.

Flower Pattern

For the flower, you’ll start with a slipknot, and then chain 3 or 4, depending upon how open or closed you want the inside of the flower to be. For each petal, you’ll chain 7, and slip knot in the ring. You can make any number of petals – 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or more.

Once completed, snip the wire with wire cutters and add a bead to the center. You can tuck in the wire towards the back. Twist it to secure it, then snip the ends. You can file down any sharp ends if needed. Or you can take round-nose pliers and bend any rough edges

Cord Pattern

If you are making a bracelet or necklace, you will need to know how many beads your finished item takes. When you follow a pattern, the designer will probably have this number listed. If you are creating something yourself, it’s a matter of trial and error. Whatever number you choose, string on the beads first.

Make a slip knot with the wire. For my sample I like to chain 4. Slide down a bead. Then chain above the bead to encase it. Chain 4 again. Slide down the second bead. Chain above the bead to secure it. Chain 4 again. Repeat the pattern of sliding down a bead, and chaining 4 in between.

Like the flower, once completed, snip the wire ends with a wire cutter. Weave in the ends. Use a file to grind down any sharp edges. Or use round-nose pliers to bend the ends inwards.
