How to Use a Double Ended Crochet Hook
A double ended crochet hook looks interesting and this written information and video tutorial will show you how to use one!
Introduction
You may have seen a crochet hook with two heads, double sided, or two crochet hooks placed together, also known as a double-ended crochet hook. These are useful for two main techniques in crochet, both are derived from Tunisian Crochet.
First Method
The first purpose of this type of hook is to easily create Tunisian crochet in the round. This type of hook helps if you are making a hat, cowl, case, and bag. Basically you will begin working in the round with drawing up as many loops as you can.
Then, once you get to a point where the yarn is too tight, you’ll work from the other direction to take off some loops on the hook. Once three loops remain on the hook, you can proceed with drawing up more loops and following the technique of removing them.
Second Method
The second purpose is to create a non-curling Tunisian crochet fabric with multiple colors and textures. This has been known in the past as “Crochet on the Double” or “Double Ended Crochet.” Did I mention this helps stop the curl you oftentimes get in Tunisian crochet.
Basically with this method you will be working in back and forth “rows.” I hesitate to say “rows” in Tunisian crochet because technically they are called “passes.” There is the forward pass and the return pass. Regardless, you’ll be working in something that looks like regular crochet’s turning rows. This keeps the stitches leaning in a different direction every row/pass, thus avoiding the curl.
I should point out it helps to know basic Tunisian crochet before working with this. If you need assistance, please see my beginner Tunisian Crochet videos.
It’s much easier to watch the video than to explain the steps for doing both. There are many patterns out there for this type of crochet. My video should help you with the basics, so that patterns then make a lot more sense. If you are searching for patterns, look for names like: Crochet on the Double, Double Sided Crochet, Double Ended Crochet, Crochenit, Crochet-Knit, Cro-hook, Cro-knit, and probably several more names that have been used throughout the decades.
