How to Crochet an Easy Shell Stitch

Crochet Easy Shell Stitch - Good for Blankets Scarves Shawls and Blankets

Here’s a really nice and easy shell stitch pattern. It’s good for blankets, scarves, shawls, handbags and more. I find this one is easy to remember. Row 2 is repeated throughout the pattern. So once you learn that one (and it’s just double crochet stitches and single crochets) – the stitch pattern works up very quickly.

I like to change colors every 2 rows. But you can make the item all one color. Or change colors every 4, 6, 8, or 10 rows.

Some people do not like stitch patterns with holes in them. Some are afraid a baby’s finger will get stuck, or a dog or cat’s claws might get caught. This is a nice almost no-holes stitch pattern that is intricate and not boring.

Supplies

  1. Yarn.

I’m using a worsted weight yarn in the sample and in the video. I do get a lot of questions on what type it is. Wish I knew myself! It was a bunch of no-name yarn in the “mill ends” section of my local AC Moore store. No label on it. No fiber content, etc. If it looks familiar, be sure to contact me and let me know what type it is!

  2. Crochet hook.

Since the yarn I am using is a worsted weight yarn, I’m using a size H 5 mm crochet hook. If you are using a different type of yarn, go with whatever hook size is listed on the label.

  3. Scissors.

A good pair of small sharp scissors works nicely when cutting the yarn ends.

  4. Yarn needle.

Be sure to have one of these handy to weave in all of the ends.
