How to Bavarian Crochet a Square

A Bavarian crochet square is a nice stitch pattern. It almost looks like the starburst stitch, made in the round. It’s great for a blanket, bag or hot pad. Some say it almost looks like the starburst stitch, made in the round. It has similarities to both the harlequin and Catherine’s wheel too.

On one hand I find the Bavarian crochet square easy to make. Once you learn where to use the 4 versus the 8 cluster stitches, the pattern almost crochets itself.

On the other hand, some of the stitches are a bit tricky if you haven’t made them before. I am torn as to whether this can be considered a beginner stitch pattern or an intermediate one. I guess you’ll have to watch the video and decide for yourself!

Stitches Used in this Pattern

The basic crochet stitches you will need to know for Bavarian crochet include the chain, slip stitch, single crochet and treble crochet. Ultimately everything in this pattern is built off those stitches.

However, there are times when we crochet plain treble crochet stitches. And there are other times when we crochet treble crochet cluster stitches. These stitches help form the starburst pattern.

Additionally, some rounds require back post stitches. Instead of working in the top of the stitch from the round below, you’ll be working around it. This creates the nice 3D effect you see in the stitch sample.

Yarn Used in this Pattern

You’ll hear me say this a million times. You can use any yarn and its corresponding hook in any stitch pattern. And this is true for this Bavarian crochet square as well.

However I would recommend if you haven’t yet done this before, try using a DK weight yarn. This is slightly thinner than a medium worsted weight yarn. The reason for this is we will be crocheting 12 treble crochet stitches into one very tiny chain stitch.

The DK weight yarn, a [3] on the yarn label, really helps with Bavarian crochet. I’m using a size F 3.75 mm crochet hook because I tend to crochet loosely. Feel free to use that hook size or even a G crochet hook, which is 4 mm or 4.25 mm, depending upon the manufacturer.
