I’ve always liked thinner slouchy hats such as this one. If you have a bad hair day or want something to dress up your outfit, a slouchy hat works excellent. Sometimes it’s too warm outside, so you don’t want a heavy hat either. This mesh hat is a good choice for men, women, and children.

You can wear your hair inside the beanie or outside as I have in the photos. Women put their hair inside hats like this in the distant past and called them a “snood.” Many times you’ll see these sported at a Renaissance fair. I believe this hat is gender-neutral, as it has a mesh or netting look, as opposed to a lace effect.

Basic Hat Construction

For the construction, we’ll first start by making the brim. The brim consists of 5 single crochet stitches made back and forth for about 80 rows, depending on the selected size. You will construct the crown after the brim. The crown section consists of double crochet stitches with chains in between.

We continue with the crown for about 20 rounds or so. After that, the following three rows begin the decrease process to close up the beanie in the back. You will make double crochet stitches without chains in between. Then, you will work in every other space.

Yarn and Hook Sizes

As far as material goes, I’m using a DK weight yarn. I happen to like the lighter feel of DK weight yarn for this. It’s one step down from traditional medium or worsted weight yarn. I’m using Bernat Softee Baby Cotton for mine, consisting of 60% cotton and 40% acrylic. Feel free to use any other fiber content that you wish. Also, I’m using a size G 4 mm crochet hook.

You can also substitute with other size yarn. I provide measurements for each step, so you can easily adjust the pattern if needed. I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I have! Donna Wolfe from Naztazia
