An Honest Review of Red Heart All In One Granny Square Yarn
Red Heart All in One Granny Square Yarn automatically changes colors on every round for granny squares. But does it really work?
About This Yarn
Before I go any further, I’d like to point out that I purchased the yarn for this review myself and am not associated with Red Heart or Yarnspirations.
Red Heart Yarns has a new yarn called “All In One Granny Square Yarn.” The premise behind this is the yarn automatically creates a granny square with 5 rounds and 5 color changes. You won’t need to weave in any ends aside from the normal beginning and ending ends. According to the yarn label, it says, “No Color Switchin’. Keep on Stitchin’.” In theory, this is both a time saver and a yarn saver.
This concept isn’t actually new in the fiber arts world. Katia Yarns produced an automatic granny square making yarn called Instagranny back in 2022. Their yarn is 100% merino wool, which comes in beautiful colors. Please note I’m not associated with them either.
Getting back to the Red Heart yarn. It comes in a variety of gorgeous colors, plus the yarn is similar in texture to Red Heart’s Soft Yarn. Specifically, the yarn is a #4 on the label (medium worsted weight) and weighs 8.8 oz / 250 g and you get 417 yds / 381 m in one skein. You also get 14 granny squares out of one skein of yarn. Regardless if the granny square color changes actually work or not, it’s a nice quality yarn for the price.
Does It Really Work?
In a nutshell, yes, the yarn creates sections of color that do not require additional weaving in of ends. The big question is, is the yarn easy to work with? Well, that’s another story best saved for the video! I can tell you this, I find crochet planned pooling quite easy to do, which is similar to the concept of what this yarn is supposed to do for granny squares. However, in the case of crochet planned pooling, you crochet over smaller sections of yarn to create patterns. With the granny square yarn, I did not find the specific lengths of (obviously longer) color changes in this granny square yarn easy to work with. It seems I always ended up with a stitch or two of the new color yarn meant for the round above the one I was working on. But there are ways around this like increasing or decreasing tension, using a different sized crochet hook, etc. Of course, there’s always fabric paint to cover any rogue stitches (don’t ask!)
If you do try this yarn, please leave a comment on either one of my review videos to let me know how it goes for you. And I hope this honest review video helps you! Donna Wolfe from Naztazia
