Tips and tricks

  • Yarn needles come in several different sizes and shapes. The 3 different types that I like are listed above and can be found on Amazon.
  • There are two common stitches used when sewing two pieces of crochet together. The first is called the whip stitch, while the second one is referred to as the mattress stitch (and there are modified versions of each stitch).
  • The whip stitch is a very visible stitch, and it is intended to be seen in the finished item.
  • The mattress stitch is a mostly invisible stitch if done correctly, and it is not intended to be seen.
  • When sewing two crochet pieces together, it is important to line up the stitches and/or rows. Pins or clips can help ensure everything is lined up properly before sewing.
  • When finishing a granny square or a circular item, you can omit the last slip stitch to the initial chain of that row. Instead, sew a “chain” at the top for a smooth finish.
  • For buttons, pom poms and other attachments that are meant for a spot-cleaned type of items (like a handbag), place a drop of super glue or clear nail polish to secure the knots. Otherwise it’s important to weave in ends securely.

One last thing – my daughter, Sarah, used several nail polish brands for me in this video. For the pink nails, she used Sally Hansen 223 Sugar Poppy. White accent nails are Sally Hansen in 345 Get Mod with black and white confetti glitter from CVS Beauty Poparazzi brand in the color Yin Meets Yang.
