This cute yarn basket ornament is perfect for anyone who crochets or knits. It’s simple to make and looks great on the Christmas tree.

I think personalized ornaments always look nice on the Christmas tree. Now you can make an ornament specifically for yarn lovers! A knitter or crocheter will be very happy with this gift. Of course you can make it for yourself too!

Construction of Basket

The basket is constructed in one piece from the bottom all the way to the top handles. I’ve also included a small liner inside, make from crochet as well. The reason for this is to keep the bottom part of the basket from sagging as it holds the mini yarns.

Single crochet is the primary stitch for this basket, along with some slip stitches and chains. If you want to change things up a bit, try some of my single crochet variations as a substitute for the main stitch of this basket. I think the cross-stitch single crochet and the waistcoat single crochet look especially nice with baskets.

Materials – Yarn and More

I’m using worsted weight yarn for this project. Scrap yarn works fantastic for this, as you need less than 20 yards. I used a beige for the main color of the basket.

The little mini yarns are made with regular worsted weight yarn too. I had some scrap colors of green, blue, and coral left over from some other projects. They wind into 1-inch mini yarns quite nicely!

Let’s talk about the crochet hook. I have a tendency to destroy crochet hooks. And it’s not just hooks – I’m just not gentle on any of my supplies. I save all of my destroyed supplies in a bin and reuse them for future projects such as this.

As you can see in the video, I snapped a bent crochet hook in half and used the top piece for my basket. I would, however, recommend using wire cutters for aluminum hooks, or a handsaw for wooden hooks. Please take all the necessary safety precautions when using these tools.

Of course if you knit, you can use toothpicks for your knitting needles instead. You can glue on little beads on top of each toothpick for a little flair.

I hope you enjoy this pattern! Donna Wolfe from Naztazia.
