About Yarn Storage Ideas

I love to crochet and knit with yarn. Yarn is super important in the fiber arts. While it produces a strong and warm finished product, it is a bit fragile in its original skein state. Maybe fragile isn’t the right word. But yarn is definitely susceptible to damage from water, dust, debris, pet hair, and both pleasant and unpleasant scents.

Granted you can wash yarn skeins, and I have a video on how to do that. But it helps to proactively protect the yarn before it gets all yucky. There are many options for storing yarn, and this video and written information will cover those ways.

Plastic Bins

Clear plastic bins are one of the most readily available ways to store and protect yarn. I happen to like the clear ones so I can see what type of yarn is inside of each. You can also easily stick a label on the outside of the bin to list the contents.

Soft Plastic Bags

If you prefer a lighter-weight option, I like these soft and clear plastic bags. These have nice handles that allow you to take many skeins of yarn around with you. Plus the double-ended zipper provides you with easy access to your yarn.

Plastic Produce Bags

Plastic produce bags are another option for keeping dust, debris, and water drips out of your yarn. Plus they help keep several skeins of yarn together. This makes stacking them much easier on the shelf.

MagicBag Vacuum Bags

I happen to love these bags for storing yarn even without using the vacuum on them. The extra strong seal and thick plastic have been protecting my yarn for years. The medium seems to be just the right size for about 8 skeins of yarn.

Vacuum Sealer Machine

If you are interested in getting a vacuum sealer machine for your smaller yarns, this is a good brand. I have one of their older machines, and it’s been working great for years.

Food Vacuum Sealer Bags

I have very good luck with this brand of food vacuum sealer bags. They come in a variety of sizes and seem to withstand just about anything I’ve put them through.
