Learn How to Knit
Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? Here’s a nice, simple, and easy video on knitting for beginners. Plus you can make this pretty cowl infinity scarf too!
English Style of Knitting
This method of knitting is oftentimes called the “English” style of knitting. You’ll often hear someone refer to it as the “throwing” method, since fast knitters look like they are throwing the yarn around the needle.
The English style of knitting video takes you step by step through creating a knitted swatch. You’ll understand how to pick out the best yarn and the best size knitting needles for your first time. In both the YouTube and Facebook videos, you’ll be shown how to cast on (casting on) to the knitting needles. Next you’ll see how to create the knit stitch (k). Then you’ll see how to create the garter stitch. Plus the purl stitch (p). Finally, the video will show to cast off (bind off, binding off, casting off).
In the YouTube video, it will demonstrate how to change colors in knitting. Plus you’ll see how to make the Essentials Knitted Cowl, which is a great starter project.
Continental Style of Knitting
It is worth mentioning that there is also another method of knitting called the Continental style of knitting. This is sometimes referred to as the “picking” method, since you sort of pick the yarn with the needles to create the stitches. The yarn is held in the left hand, and stitches are made in a slightly different way.
English Knitting vs Continental Knitting
There is a HUGE debate among knitters as to which method is better or easier or quicker, etc. English style or Continental style? Personally, after having taught both knitting and crochet for countless years to others, I find it is best to start off new knitters with the English style of knitting shown in the beginner video below. Then, once you get the hang of it, try the Continental style. I happen to have a video for the Continental method as well if you are curious.
