It forms a nice shell or scallop border along a crochet or even knit item. It definitely has a 3D puffy look to it, so it adds some interest to blankets and especially scarves.

Surface crochet is a great way to add some interesting detail to your crochet work. It is very similar to the technique known in sewing as chain embroidery. It can also be considered slip stitch crochet.
