How to Crochet Christmas Gnome
Here is a cute crochet Christmas Gnome. He or she works nicely as a decoration or a larger tree ornament! It’s easy, quick, and simple to make!
About this Pattern
This Christmas crochet gnome pattern is easy to make and works up very quickly. If you can crochet a chain and a single crochet, you can make this pattern!
For the past two holiday seasons, these cute little gnomes have been seen everywhere in the stores. I did some research on them and found out they are officially called nisse. Wikipedia has a nice article on the origins of nisse HERE.
Turns out these Scandinavian or Nordic gnomes have been around a very long time. They have different names besides nisse. You might see them listed as tomte, tomtenisse, or tonttu.
My Mom says they remind her of Santa Claus or St Nick. Whatever you’d like to call them, this crochet version can be used as a decoration or even a toy. It can also serve as a larger Christmas tree ornament.
Supplies Needed
You’ll need less than 150 yards total of worsted weight yarn for this project. I’m using 100% acrylic yarn for mine. Red Heart Super Saver works nicely for this, as it has enough stiffness to support the different shapes needed to make this gnome. Also see if you can find Red Heart Stripes in “Latte Stripes.” You can get a good number of skin tone colors from just that one skein of yarn.
I’m also using a size G crochet hook, which depending upon the manufacturer, could be a 4 mm or 4.25 mm. One of these days maybe they’ll standardize it!
And finally I’m using stuffing. Polyester fiberfill is the safest choice for stuffing a crochet toy. You can also use scraps of yarn as well. Whatever you do, PLEASE NEVER EVER USE DRYER LINT as stuffing. Unfortunately lint such as that is combustible and could create a hazard.
If you are using this little gnome as a decoration, I highly recommend placing some clean pebbles on the bottom. That will help weight the crochet toy down a bit. It won’t fall over or lean to one side then.
