A crochet clover shamrock looks great as an applique for St. Patrick’s Day, or any time of the year! Made with worsted weight yarn, this crochet shamrock can be added to a hat, scarf, shawl, bag, and more.
Shamrock or Clover
I try to do a little research on items before I crochet them. For example, I wanted to learn the meaning behind what is a shamrock and what is a clover. There is a lot of different data out there on the subject!
From what I can tell, a shamrock is a very specific type of clover in the history of Ireland and St. Patrick. As I understand it, a shamrock traditionally has only 3 sections, as opposed to 4. Some believe the 3 sections of the clover represent faith, hope, and love. Others believe they represent the Holy Trinity in Christianity.
If you go with the faith, hope, and love theory, when you spot a 4-leaf clover, that fourth leaf represents luck. Hence why a four-leaf clover is considered lucky!
And if you are into a more scientific study of plants called botany, they too seem to have some difficulty identifying what a traditional shamrock is. I don’t feel so bad now.
Crochet Information
While I have some level of uncertainty still in the history of a shamrock and a clover, I can tell you some factual information about this crochet pattern! This clover is made with worsted weight acrylic yarn and a size H 5 mm crochet hook. The stitches are worked in rounds. Once you make the first petal, the remaining 2 petals are made with the very same stitches.
In this pattern you’ll be using the magic ring, which is just a loose slipknot. Check out my detailed video if you need help with a magic ring, oftentimes called a magic loop. You’ll also need to know how to crochet a chain, slip stitch, half double crochet, and a treble crochet.
