How to Crochet Double Shell Border Edging
The crochet double shell border edging consists of two rows of slanted shell stitches. It works great along a blanket, scarf, shawl, and more.
About the Double Shell Border
This border edging is a relatively simple pattern to remember. You’ll first start with a rows of mesh stitches. Basically you’ll make double crochet stitches separated by two chains.
Once that is completed, you’ll begin the first shell stitch row. You’ll use the double crochet stitches created by the foundation row to work the beginning and ending of the slanted shells. As always I have a step-by-step how to tutorial video for this pattern.
You will need to know the basics of crochet, such as the chain, single crochet and double crochet. If you need help, please see my beginner crochet videos for both the right and left hand.
Yarn and Other Supplies
As always, you can use this double shell border pattern with any size yarn or crochet hook. For this particular sample shown in the video, I’m using worsted weight yarn and a size G 4 mm hook.
Feel free to use any size yarn, such as DK, worsted, even bulky with this. I usually like to check the yarn label for the recommended hook size. If you find you crochet too loosely, you might want to take it down one hook size. And conversely, if you crochet too tightly, you might want to size up one from the recommended size.
You might want to consider choices in your yarn colors for this double shell. In my sample, I used a gray color for the mesh foundation area. Then I changed over to green for the first set of shell stitches. Then I chose a blue for the second set of shells. You can certainly do all of these in one color. Or you can do as I did – vary the colors.
