How to Crochet the Fan Stitch – Large Shell Stitch Pattern
The crochet fan stitch is a large shell stitch pattern that produces large fans or shells in the crochet work. It is relatively simple to do and looks great for any project that you want more of a bold, yet open look.
What do you use this crochet stitch for?
The crochet fan stitch pattern would work nice in a baby blanket or afghan. It also looks great for accessories like a shawl or scarf. Don’t forget curtains, as a border or edging, and more. I happen to favor this stitch in a shawl, most especially!
Yarn weight and hook size suggestions for this big fan stitch.
With crochet stitches, you can generally use any weight of yarn. Plus I look to use its corresponding crochet hook, usually suggested on the yarn label. However, with this particular stitch pattern, I would recommend going with a DK weight yarn – a number [3] on the label – or even thinner. And I’m using a size G 4 mm or 4.25 mm crochet hook. This is not to say thicker yarns won’t work. However, with the 13 TR made in a single stitch for each fan, it can get quite crowded if the yarn is too thick!
This crochet stitch pattern is a multiple of 12 + 2. In this sample I’m starting with a chain 50 (CH 50).
Tips and tricks with this larger shell stitch.
Note: there are several ways to create stitches on top of a starting chain. With this crochet fan stitch stitch, I recommend using the back loops only of the chain for your first time. Otherwise, if you go under 2 loops of each chain, or in the back bump of the chain, the chain that occurs right after each 13-TR sometimes shrinks and disappears, messing up your count.
Of course, another way to avoid this problem with the crochet fan stitch is to create a foundation row. You can use some other stitch, such as a single crochet, double crochet, etc.
