Crochet Flame Stitch Border Edging
Learn how to crochet the flame stitch border edging with this pattern and video. The little motifs produce a neat stitch pattern for a blanket, scarf, shawl and more!
I’m always looking for something new for a border or edging. But with this one, I looked at something old! My grandmother had used something similar to this on one of her blankets from the 70s. I liked how it formed peaks. So I took my crochet hook and yarn and came up with this cute flame stitch border pattern.
Stitches Used
This crochet edging uses just about all the standard crochet stitches. You’ll use the chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet in the flame stitch. If anything, it’s a good way to review all the common crochet stitches. My beginner crochet video for right-handers or the one for left-handers can help get you started.
The nice thing is the pattern is extremely easy to remember. You’ll find to create the peaks it’s a combination of the standard series of stitches. Single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet, in that order. Then the reverse occurs to form the other side of the peak.
Stitch Multiple
For what it’s worth, it is a stitch multiple of 4 + 3. What that means is if you are making this border along one edge of a blanket, the stitches across will need to be a multiple of 4.
For example, you’ll start with 40. And then you’ll need 3 more stitches, for a total of 43 stitches. In case yours does not equal that, normally you would make a single crochet border all the way around first, sneaking in a stitch or two at the corners to compensate for it.
Yarn and Hook
As with all stitch patterns or borders, you can use any size yarn and hook. In my sample, because I was using scraps of Red Heart yarn, I used a size H 5 mm crochet hook.
Feel free to continue using whatever yarn and hook you are currently using for the main part of your crochet project. If you are making a baby blanket with [3] DK weight yarn and a G 4 mm or 4.25 mm hook, feel free to continue doing so if you wish to use this edging on it.
