You can crochet ice skates with a paperclip. These work great as an ornament for the tree or as a pin for your coat!

For those who know my story, my Gram insisted we learn how to crochet at an early age. I started when I was about 5. In the early 80s, I loved making crochet items. These ice skates made with a paperclip were one of my first Christmas crochet projects. My Mom has my first ones somewhere. One of these days I’ll have to do a video of my first projects. I’ve definitely come a long way since that time!

Anywho, these skates are easy to make and are great for a beginner to crochet. You just need to know how to make a chain and a single crochet stitch. If you do not know how, my beginner crochet videos can help with that.

Materials and More

You’ll need two 2 inch paperclips for this. Not the small ones but the larger ones that we all have somewhere on our desk or cabinet. I happen to like the silver ones, but paperclips come in all sorts of colors these days. Feel free to mix things up a bit!

I’m using a DK weight yarn. That’s a tad thinner than the normal worsted weight yarn. I happen to like Lion Brand’s Mandala yarn for this. You only need less than 20 yards of yarn. And the Mandala comes in nice sections of colorful yarn. If you break up the skein, you’ll have a ton of lovely colors to choose from.

It’s always a good idea to save yarn from the ends of projects, even if it’s only 15 or 20 yards. Projects like this are perfect for small bits of yarn!
