Crochet Ornament Stitch

The crochet ornament stitch pattern produces a nice 3D effect! The pattern consists of several types of double crochet stitches and works up very quickly.

There are many uses for this stitch pattern. First, it makes wonderful blankets. It’s quite decorative and textured, yet still can be used for an everyday blanket. This stitch is nice for a scarf or a shawl too. Plus, with finer yarn or thread, it can be made into a lovely tunic or skirt.

Stitches Used

The pattern starts off with a chain, which is a multiple of 8 plus 5. What that means is you can chain any number of chains that is a multiple of 8, such as 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, etc. And then you add 5 more chains. So your final starting chain could be 13, 21, 29, 37, 45, etc.

Once you do that, the first row is a set up of 3 double crochet stitches alternating with a 5 double crochet in a single chain. On row 2, that’s where things get interesting! You’ll continue placing 3 double crochet stitches over the previous row’s double crochet stitches.

Then you will be introduced to a fpdc5tog stitch. A what!? It’s a front post double crochet 5 together stitch. Basically, it’s a decrease stitch made of double crochet stitches that are done around the post section of the stitch from the row below. The tutorial video shows how it’s a lot easier to do than what you’d think!

You’ll do a slightly modified version of Row 1 for Row 3. And then Row 4 is just a repeat of Row 2. You’ll continue repeating Rows 3 and 4 for whatever height you wish for your project.

Suggested Yarn

This is one of those stitches that can use any kind of yarn. I’m using worsted weight yarn with a size H 5 mm hook in the video sample. However feel free to use a bulky or a super bulky weight yarn with a larger hook. Or a much thinner yarn or crochet thread along with a finer hook.
