Crochet Pom Pom Border Edging

This crochet pom pom border edging works nice along a blanket, scarf, shawl and more! Made with a double crochet cluster stitch, it works up fast and easy.

I’m always on the lookout for crochet border edgings. My grandmother always had neat edgings along her afghans. And since she made a ton of shawls and scarves, they all had something interesting to look at along the border as well.

This pom pom border is one I found along the edging of a baby sweater made for me back in the early 70s. The cute little bobbles really dressed up that sweater. It was a nice alternative to yarn fringe, which was rather popular in that era.

By the way, is it pom pom? Or is it spelled pompom, pom pon or pompon? I’ve heard it said and spelled in so many different ways!

Stitches For this Border Edging

This crochet pattern uses relatively beginner stitches. There is the chain and single crochet. It also uses a 5-double crochet cluster stitch to form the little pom poms. While that might seem a bit daunting for a beginner, it’s really not that bad. By the way, check out my beginner crochet videos, for both right and left hand, if you need assistance with the basics of crochet.

Cluster stitches are ones that start out with a stitch, but you don’t finish it. You immediately begin the next stitch and not finish that one either. After the designated number of stitches have been completed, you will make a yarn over and pull the loop through.

Yarn, Hook, and Supplies

You can use any size or weight of yarn with this crochet pom pom stitch pattern. Whatever your current blanket is using should be just fine with this border. My baby sweater had fine #2 yarn, which worked nicely. I’ve also done this with super bulky yarn. Anything in between should work as well.

As always, use the hook you are already using for your project. Or use whatever is suggested on the yarn label for that particular yarn in this border edging.
