How to Crochet an Easy Slouchy Hat Beanie
Learn how to crochet an easy slouchy hat beanie with this pattern and tutorial video. It uses Tunisian crochet and works up quickly!
Slouchy Hat Construction
This crochet beanie is made using Tunisian crochet. I find Tunisian crochet to be even easier than regular crochet!
This hat is constructed in rows. Each row will consist of several stitches that form the brim of the hat. And the remaining stitches will form the crown of the hat. Essentially, we’ll be making the hat starting from the forehead part up towards the top of your head. After we seam the beginning and ending rows together, we’ll cinch the top of the hat closed. If you need assistance with sewing and crochet, check out my how-to video here.
You can add a pompom or button or tag on if you wish. The faux fur pompoms, made with synthetic fibers like acrylic or polyester, seem to be popular these days. And those little vinyl tags are cute too!
Tunisian Crochet
Tunisian crochet requires that you have a Tunisian crochet hook. And I classify those hooks in two types of categories. The first type looks like a longer crochet hook. The one I used in the video is made of aluminum and runs about 10 inches long. The second type consists of a regular crochet hook with a thick fishing wire coming out the handle part. They sometimes call these “extended” Tunisian crochet hooks.
Another type of Tunisian crochet hook is the kind you get in an interchangeable set. With these, you’ll get smaller versions of crochet hooks in multiple sizes, and you can connect the fishing wire stitch holder to the end of them. You can create custom Tunisian hooks this way. This is nice if you find yourself doing a lot of Tunisian crochet!
Sizing
This pattern lists sizes for an average woman’s head circumference (22″) and provides other sizes for an average man’s head (24″), child (20″) and toddler (18″). Granted, “average” is only a number. Back when my son was 7 years old, his head measured 22″ around! And it’s even larger today. Yep, he’s going to be a rather large adult in another several years.
Help with Sizes
If you are making a woman’s size (for a 22″ head circumference) and find out that the width of each row is not 12″, there are several things you can do.
First, if you are getting a number less than 12 inches, you can try a larger hook size. That will force each of your stitches to become larger, hence increase the width of the row.
If you are getting a number larger than 12 inches, honestly, if it’s 13 or 14 inches, I think that’s just fine. It will only make the hat a bit slouchier and that’s not a bad thing. However if it’s significantly larger, try a smaller crochet hook. This will make your stitches smaller.
Also, try to draw up each of the loops a bit higher on the forward pass of each row. That will force your stitches to be a bit looser. Take a look in my video how I do mine.
Next, you can try a different yarn. Sometimes one yarn is a smidge thicker than another, which helps increase (or decrease) the row size.
Finally, you can add chains. There is no stitch multiple to this pattern. So feel free to chain 55 instead. I would still suggest to reserve the first 10 loops for the Tunisian Reverse Stitch. Then finish the remaining loops with the Tunisian Simple Stitch.
And as mentioned in the pattern and video, the number of rows translates to the circumference of the head. So feel free to easily increase or decrease from the 63 rows to properly fit the head size.
