About the Stitch Pattern

The crochet smock stitch produces a wonderful texture for a hat, scarf, shawl, blanket, and more. The pattern is primarily made with single crochet, elongated single crochet, and single crochet 2 together stitches.

The first two rows are setup rows. They consist of single crochet stitches. Then rows 3, 4, 5 and 6 are repeated throughout the pattern.

Alternating rows of extended stitches along with rows of single crochet 2 together stitches form the main section. Rows 5 and 6 stagger a bit to create the offset look; however they are made similarly to rows 3 and 4.

There is a similar type of stitch pattern in Tunisian crochet; however this particular smock stitch pattern is made with a regular crochet hook.

Supplies Used in the Sample

In my sample, I wanted to clearly show on camera where to place your crochet hook. So I used a super bulky weight yarn and an L 8 mm crochet hook.

However, feel free to use any other type of yarn along with its corresponding crochet hook. For example, I oftentimes use worsted weight yarn with a size H 5 mm crochet hook with this pattern.

As always, there’s a step-by-step tutorial video for this pattern. If you need any assistance with the basics of crochet, please see my beginner tutorial videos.
