About this Pattern

I love flowers, especially crochet ones. The sunflower is a gorgeous flower that look so pretty against a blue sky. Plus, sunflowers represent peace. We sure need peace in our world these days!

This flower is pretty simple to make and good for someone who knows the basic stitches of crochet. The center section consists of 2 rounds of double crochet stitches.

Next, each petal is made the same way. You’ll first chain 7, then make a series of single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet stitches along it. You’ll then connect the petal to the brown section and start the next petal.

The leaves are optional and are made in a similar manner to each of the sunflower petals. You’ll first chain 11, then make a series again of single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and treble crochet stitches along it. Then you’ll pivot your work and work on the other side of the starting chain with the same pattern. A slip stitch closes the leaf and gives it a nice finishing touch.

Materials Needed

For this pattern I’m using Red Heart Super Saver yarn, which is a 100% acrylic in worsted weight. Plus, I’m using a size G 4 mm crochet hook. Feel free to use cotton yarn instead, if that’s what you have in the stash.

Plus, you can easily change the size of the flower by using a different size yarn/thread and its corresponding crochet hook. For example, you can use the same stitch configuration with a DK weight yarn to make the flower a bit smaller. Or use the configuration with super bulky weight yarn to make a really large flower.

For the photo I chose to use the sunflower as a traditional stemmed flower. I like to use a floral stem or green dowel. NOTE: If you also make wreaths or other floral items and just use the “flower” part for your project, be sure to save the stem for projects like this!

Craft dowels make great stems too. You can wrap them with yarn or floral tape. Or just paint them a nice shade of green. Since these flowers won’t be laundered like a hat or scarf would be (just spot cleaned if needed), I use hot glue to connect the stem to the flower and the leaves to the stem. Hot glue works great with yarn items.

I hope this pattern helps. Please check out the step-by-step tutorial video on how to make these sunflowers!
