How to Crochet a Snowflake Christmas Ornament

A crochet snowflake ornament is so much fun for Christmas or the winter season! This crochet pattern is easy to make with worsted weight 100% cotton (the type used for a dishcloth). So it works up very quickly! Because medium weight cotton yarn is used, it retains some stiffness. What that means is you really don’t need to further stiffen it with a stiffening product like glue and water.

Of course, if you prefer the stiffer type of snowflake ornament, feel free to dip the snowflake in prepared mixture of 50% glue and 50% water in a bowl. Once it sits in there for about 30 seconds and becomes fully saturated with the mixture, take it out, and carefully squeeze out the excess liquid. Place the snowflake on a water-safe surface, and shape it. Then let it dry. Or spray Aleene’s Stiffening product according to the instructions (you can find the link below).

I like hanging these crochet snowflakes as ornaments on my Christmas tree. Sometimes I also hang them from the window like a sun catcher. Because worsted weight cotton comes in so very many colors, you can opt for something besides the traditional white. This year we’ll be decorating our tree with more icy blue colors, so this blue snowflake will match perfectly!

Because it’s a snowflake, we’ll create 6 sides to it. Luckily, the crochet stitches for each side is a repeat of the previous side. So once you learn the first side, it becomes much easier to work the other 5 sides.

You will need to know several stitches prior to crocheting this snowflake. You’ll need to know the slipknot, slip stitch (SLST), chain (CH), single crochet (SC), half double crochet (HDC) and double crochet (DC) puff stitches. The tutorial video takes you step-by-step through the process.
