How to Crochet a Watermelon Pad for the Kitchen

This crochet watermelon pad works great in the kitchen. You can use it as a potholder, a hot pad, or an all-purpose cloth. Made with 100% cotton yarn, this watermelon is cute and colorful and a wonderful kitchen accessory.

How It’s Made

This crochet pad is made using primarily double crochet stitches, with 2 final rounds of half double crochet stitches. Two sides are made and then crocheted together for a thicker pad. The piece is worked in the round, with a watermelon color for the first 5 rounds. Then, you’ll crochet with one round of white yarn for the rind, followed by green yarn for the skin.

Before connecting the two pieces together, you can embroider the watermelon seeds with black yarn. You won’t need much for this section. If you don’t have black yarn, you can also use a dark brown yarn. Or you can substitute with some black or dark brown embroidery floss.

Should you need assistance with changing yarn colors in crochet, my video tutorial here can help with that.

If you wish, you can add a loop at the top to hang the pad on a hook. It really depends upon your personal preference. As always, check out my YouTube tutorial videos for assistance on the basics of crochet. This one is the right-hand version and this one is the left-hand version.

Materials Used

Everyone has a preference regarding yarn. Some people feel you need to use 100% cotton yarn for kitchen accessories. Other people find that 100% acrylic yarn works best. And yet others feel the very traditional 100% wool works best in the kitchen.

It has been my experience that all fibers have their pros and cons. Some fibers stretch and lose their shape quicker than others, such as cotton. While other fibers don’t retain water as much, such as acrylic. Some fibers are more heat-resistant than others, such as wool.

Much depends upon what you plan on using the item for. I tend to shy away from using acrylic when using these to rest a hot dish on. However, I find cotton and wool work great as a trivet. Growing up, I was taught dishcloths should be made of cotton. However, one of my friends stated they use acrylic for dishcloths (tawashi) in many Asian countries. I’ve since switched and like acrylic now for dishcloths. If you plan on using these for a decoration, you can pretty much use any yarn material.
