How to Crochet the Granny Cluster Stitch

The crochet granny cluster stitch is a nice variation on the traditional granny stitch. It is comprised of a 3 double crochet cluster stitch, followed by a row of the moss stitch. This stitch pattern is really pretty, adds a lovely texture, yet doesn’t take up very much yarn. It’s not a yarn eater like some cluster stitches! By the way, if you don’t already know how to crochet, please check out my How to Crochet for Beginners video.

What can I make with this stitch?

This stitch works wonderfully in a blanket, baby blanket, afghan, throw, shawl, scarf, bag, and more. With this particular sample you see, I am changing colors every row for the cluster stitch. In the video, you’ll see I am using gray yarn for the moss stitch in between each cluster stitch row. You can change colors like I did. Or you can use one color throughout. Or make all the clusters one color and all the moss rows in between another color.

What kind of yarn should I use for the cluster stitch?

As always, you can use any type of yarn you wish for this variation of the granny stitch. Any kind of fiber content such as cotton, acrylic, wool, etc. will work just fine. You can use any size or weight of yarn too. The thickness of the yarn does not matter – everything from thin crochet thread to super bulky weight roving yarn all look nice.

What kind of hook do I use?

Next, you might be wondering what size hook you should use? That depends solely on the thickness of the yarn. Generally speaking, worsted weight yarn looks good with an H size hook. Although if you crochet too tightly, you might want to go up one to a size I hook. If you crochet too loosely, you might want to go down to a size G hook instead.

If you look on the yarn label, most of them will tell you the recommended crochet hook (and knitting needle) size to use. They also suggest a gauge, which is the number of stitches and the number of rows in a 4 inch square. I usually follow those guidelines.

Winding Road Crochet

My friend Lindsey over at Winding Road Crochet designed a beautiful blanket pattern using the cluster stitch along with the moss stitch. Then she added a beautiful mini basket weave border. I’d highly recommend checking out her Crochet Modern Stripes Blanket pattern!
