Tunisian Crochet for Beginners

What to learn Tunisian crochet for beginners? This is a neat alternative to traditional crochet that looks similar to knitting. In the past this style of crochet has been referred to as afghan stitch crochet.

You can make anything with this style of crochet. Most people in the past have made gorgeous baby blankets, afghans, scarves, shawls, and more. Because it is so similar in look to knitting, this type of crochet works great for accessories like hats, gloves, socks, and more.

Supplies

To do this type of crochet for beginners, you will need some yarn. Any size weight yarn will work. For a sample, it’s probably best to use regular worsted weight yarn. You will also need a Tunisian crochet hook, sometimes known in the past as an afghan hook. This tool looks sometime like a knitting needle with a crochet hook on the end. For larger blankets and afghans, an extended afghan hook works wonderfully. With this, a crochet hook is on one end, and a fishing wire type of tubing connects to the other end. This wire can hold many, many stitches as you work.

Stitches

In Tunisian crochet, there are two parts to each row. A forward pass and a return pass. This usually makes up one full row. The forward pass consists of drawing up loops and placing them on the long hook. The return pass consists of removing loops from the hook, usually two at a time.

During the forward pass, precisely where you insert in your hook determines what Tunisian crochet stitch you are working on. In the Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS) you will insert your crochet hook into the front bars or loops. In the Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS) you will insert your hook through the main bars or loops. The video shows precisely how to do this.
