How to Crochet 3D Shell Stitch
This 3D Shell Stitch is one of the easiest textured crochet stitches. This pattern works great for a crochet baby blanket, scarf, shawl, and more.
I’m a huge fan of shell stitches. They look great in just about any kind of crochet item. 3D and textured stitches are unique as well. This 3D shell stitch pattern forms a marvelous look to anything you make with it.
For the most part, the stitches are just chains and double crochet. The 3D texture consists of shell stitches with front post double crochet stitches on both sides. As luck would have it, the pattern is a two-row repeat. One row consists of shell stitches, while the second row consists of V stitches. The shell stitch is what I call the pattern of 3 double crochet, a chain 1, and 3 double crochet stitches. The V stitch is a double crochet, a chain 2, and a double crochet made in the same spot.
You can use any yarn you wish for this stitch pattern. I’ve used lightweight yarns as well as bulky weight yarns. Feel free to use a fine thread for a lacy textured scarf. I used a worsted weight yarn and a size G 4 mm crochet hook in this particular sample.
You might be wondering where did I get the yarn. The skeins are from AC Moore before they went out of business. They had these enormous bins of mill-ends yarn in the back of the store. The term “mill ends” is a catch-all phrase for yarn that might be a bit damaged due to the dyeing process. Or perhaps they couldn’t create a full skein with it, so they wound what they could. I certainly wish I could get more of it. In any case, this stuff works great for my stitch sample videos!
I hope you enjoy this pattern! By the way, if you need assistance with the basics of crochet, check out my beginner crochet videos for the right hand as well as videos for left-handed crochet.
