How to Crochet Mini Check Plaid Stitch

The crochet mini check plaid stitch pattern is one of the more colorful stitches. Use it for a baby blanket, shawl, scarf, and more.

About this Crochet Stitch

My grandmother always made stitch-sampler blankets. These blankets contained squares made up of different crochet stitches. She always had unique stitches in her blankets. I learned most of them back in the early 80s. Now you know where I get the inspiration for so many of the crochet stitches you see on my website.

I always had a fondness for this particular mini check plaid stitch. This one consists primarily of sets of three double crochet stitches, separated by three chains. I also remember my grandmother making this stitch pattern using groups of two double crochet with two chains instead. I like the look of the three double crochet stitches, as it reminds me of a modified granny stitch.

Changing Yarn Colors

As you can see, each row consists of a different color of yarn. This is what creates the little blocks or checks. The nice thing about this pattern is you can carry the yarn up and along the sides. This way, you only have to weave in a few yarn strands instead of multiple ones after every row.

I’ve always done this pattern using three colors of yarn. This amount seems to be an ideal number of colors. There is enough contrast and color without being too hard on the eyes.

Speaking of the yarn, I generally use worsted weight yarn for this one. However, feel free to use a lighter DK weight yarn or even a larger bulky weight yarn.

Mini Check Crochet Stitches

This crochet stitch pattern is pretty simple for even a beginner. You will need to know how to chain, single crochet, double crochet, and slip stitch. Most of the pattern consists of the number three: three double crochet, three chains, three colors, etc. Because of this, this crochet stitch pattern is relatively easy to remember.
