How to Use a Lucet
A lucet is a vintage Viking tool used to create braided cords. Learn the basics of braiding using lucets with yarn to make icords and braids!
Lucet Use
Lucets go back to the Viking days, when the people used these tools to make cording for everyday use. Important items were hung from belts with cords. Even bags were closed with these cords.
I’m sure every Viking is turning over in his grave right now looking at that pretty pink cord and 3D flower coming out of that lucet! It’s OK though, I’m also sure every Viking is also thrilled I’m keeping alive the wonderful tradition of making braided cords with lucets.
It’s important to note there are many different patterns for making cords and braids. The basic, easy one I’m showing in my tutorial video forms a pattern very similar to a typical knitted icord. And when you see how to use a lucet, it might remind you of the same techniques used in loom knitting and spool knitting.
Yarn Cord Thread
Feel free to use any fiber with a lucet. You can use wool, macrame cotton, regular acrylic yarn, twine, embroidery floss, even dental floss! It’s best to keep the thickness of the cording to a “reasonable” size, as too thick or too thin of a fiber might not be easy to wrap around the lucet. Granted they do make larger and smaller lucets, so there’s always that option!
I found my standard wooden lucet on Amazon, which I have linked below. You might also find one in your local craft store. At some regional fiber shows I visit in the fall, some vendors sell 3D printed ones, which are awesome! You might also find some on Etsy as well.
