How to Crochet the X Marks the Spot Granny Square
The X Marks the Spot Granny Square is a different take on the traditional motif. Color changing techniques help create the design.
Color Changes
If you have ever made a traditional motif before, you generally work in the round and change colors every round or two. Plus the colors form squares within the design.
With this square, you will carry both yarn upwards through the various round and change colors within rounds. Corners will be Color A, while the center and sides will always be Color B.
By carrying yarn and changing colors depending upon the placement you can create a myriad of designs, including this X pattern.
Carrying yarn and changing colors seems a bit daunting if you’ve never done this before. Generally speaking, as you’ll see in the video, you change colors on the last part of the stitch before you actually want the color change to occur.
For example, a pattern might list stitches such as one single crochet, one half double crochet, one double crochet. If you want the color change on the double crochet, you’ll need to finish the single crochet with the new color yarn.

Yarn and Hook and More
I’m using a size G 4 mm hook with worsted weight yarn, specifically Red Heart Super Saver. I always feel 100% acrylic yarn, especially the Super Saver, does a nice job holding its shape with crochet blocks.
If the yarn is too soft sometimes the block’s shape gets all wonky. Red Heart’s yarn has just the right amount of softness to make a nice blanket, yet a bit of strength to keep designs such as this looking good.
