How to Crochet Flower for a Hat

Here is a crochet flower for a hat or headband. It is a layered flower that takes very little yarn to make. The leaves are also very simple to crochet!

This crochet flower starts off with making a base of loops. Then each layer is made in a different color yarn (or you can use the same color). The loops are used to make the petals.

Want to learn how to crochet a leaf? The crochet leaves are made of several basic crochet stitches worked on one side of the starting chain, and then along the other side. Finally, some surface crochet is used to create a chain like look along the middle section.

Multi-layered flowers like this are really pretty and can be great for using up scrap yarn!

Yarn and Hook

For this pattern I’m using scrap yarn from my stash of Red Heart Super Saver yarn. Super Saver is a 100% acrylic, worsted weight yarn.

I’m using a yellow for the center of this crochet flower for a hat. Then a medium pink (Perfect Pink) for the edges, followed by a lighter pink (Baby Pink). Then the center petals are made with Buff, which is a light cream color. The leaves are made with a nice green called “Fresh Mint.” It’s a great color for this use.

This pattern takes less than 20 yards per flower. And a size G 4 mm crochet hook. I’m also using a 1/2 inch button for the center of the flower. I like to take a long piece of yarn, and sew the button to the flower. Then using the same strands, work the leaves next. Finally, use the same strands to attach the flower to your hat.
