How to Make a Face Mask with Common Household Items.
Here is how to make a face mask. I’ll show you both NO SEW and SEW face mask methods for you and your family using household items.
The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) has issued new guidelines regarding wearing cloth face masks, which you can read here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/diy-cloth-face-coverings.html
Basically, any time you are in a public setting such as going to the grocery store for food, you should have some type of mask over your nose and mouth. And a cloth one serves this purpose according to their latest information. Additional guidance from the CDC can be found here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/cloth-face-cover.html
While this does not serve as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) it does however help prevent my germs from getting on you, and your germs from getting on me. As my Pennsylvania Health Department says: “My mask protects you, your mask protects me.”
There are two types of face masks I will show you in the video. The first are no-sew ones, which means you don’t need any type of needle and thread. And the second type are sewn ones, which means you will need to either hand sew or machine sew them.
No-Sew Face Mask
For the no-sew face mask, you can use common everyday items like a bandana, heavyweight t-shirt, baseball cap, ponytail elastics, rubber bands, and more
In the tutorial video, I’ll show you step-by-step how to wrap a bandana around your nose and mouth using rubber bands or hair elastics. If you don’t have a bandana, you can cut a heavyweight t-shirt into a 22″x22″ square and use that instead.
And if you don’t like elastics around your ears, I’ll show you two other methods. The first requires a baseball cap or hat. And the second requires a ponytail.
Sew a Face Mask
If you are looking to know how to sew a face mask, I’ll show a basic pattern that can be used two different ways. Based upon current recommendations, we should be using 100% cotton fabric.
Probably the best material to use is quilter’s cotton. I have some pre-cut fabric called “fat quarters,” which work perfectly for these masks. The thicker the fabric, the better.
You can also use hair ties, ribbon, string, shoe laces, elastic, scrunchie elastic, and more to connect the face mask to either your ears or as ties around your head.
