Surface Crochet
Surface crochet is a great way to add some interesting detail to your crochet work. It is very similar to the technique known in sewing as chain embroidery. It can also be considered slip stitch crochet.
For this particular crochet technique, I like to use an existing work of single crochet (SC). You can use other stitches too; however I find single crochet works best because it has a relatively square shape. Basically the length and width are about the same. You will use the spaces in between the stitches as a guide to doing surface crochet and each slip stitch (SLST) or chain (CH).
In this video you’ll see how I make a straight line with surface crochet. Next I show how to write the letter N using the technique. And finally I show how you can easily make hearts on your crochet work.
And for this particular sample I am using some Red Heart Super Saver yarn and a size H hook. For each of the horizontal chains, I used just one strand of yarn. However for the heart itself, I used 2 strands of yarn held together. In some projects, I’ve used 4, 5, or 6 strands of yarn held together to create a really puffy look.
